The global electric two-wheeler market, which includes both scooters and motorcycles is not growing fast as we were expecting after covid 19 and, due to the decline of the Chinese two-wheeler industry, in the period 2022-2024 reported a cumulated 12% lost.

However the start of 2025 is very promising although key markets have experienced the reduction of government sustain to the industry (India) or have suddenly stopped the just started support (Indonesia) or further postponed the introduction of widely announced actions (The Philippines).

Regional Analysis

China remains the dominant player in the global electric two-wheeler market, accounting for 73% of the total sales. After having lost near one third in the previous three years, in the first half 2025 sales increased by 4.0%. Today, all top Chinese EVs manufacturers are focused on expanding their activity abroad.

India has emerged as the second-largest market, driven by new regulations and incentives for electric vehicles. In the first part of this year and although available incentives were reduced, sales increased 9.1% with TVS Motor taking the leadership ahead of pure EV manufacturers, like Ola Electric and Ather.

Vietnam ranks third, with 209,000 EVs units sold last year. The start of 2025 was outstanding with sales increased 99.2% and with the local EV specialist, Vinfast, jumping within the Top 10 global manufacturers. 

Turkey is the 4th market thanks to a 37.4% increase in the EVs, while the ICE market is struggling, following the recent years boom.

Indonesia market lost 32.2% this year, following the government decision to stop incentives to the sector in December 2024 creating embarazing reactions by domestic startups and just landed foreign companies (Yadea, Tailg and others) which were expecting a long term stable commitment to the sector growth. Now the government changed mind again and the incentive restarted on August 1st.

Future Prospects

The number of electric two-wheelers in circulation exceed the 80 million, representing the 8.8% of the total 2-wheeler fleet introduced in the last decade.
