Germany Motorcycles Market shines in May with sales at 26.633, up 14.6% with year to date figures at 92.936 units (-7.6%). The outlook improved and the recovery is faster than expected with the full 2020 projected in line with the previous year and with 2021 above the 200k.
2020 & 2021 Motorcycles Market Data & Outlook
The German motorcycles industry started the 2020 with a huge increase in January (+42%) before to moderate in February (+3.7%) and lose in March (-19.8%) and in April (-28.2%) when was anyhow the best performer among the Big 5 European countries and the largest country for volumes in the entire continent.
The Covid19 experience left people with more desire from freedom and mobility, individually if possible, and the German two-wheeler market reaction in May has proved. Our expectations were already positive, but sales data exceeded the forecast anticipating the recovery. Sales were 26.633, up 14.6% with year to date figures at 92.936 units (-7.6%).
Launching the Beyond Covid19 project dedicated to the motorcycles industry, the McD Research Team is producing forecasts for the next months and years, and considering the uniqueness of the current circumstances, these forecasts are revised, country by country, each month.
Based on the results of this project, the total 2020 sales expected in Germany are 193.185, flat on the previous year, by far the best performance among the largest European countries, with an improved outlook from the last month.
Aprilia shines in the 2019 while the market increased 5%
According to data released by the German Minister of Transportations, in the 2019 the two-wheeler industry in Germany was almost positive, scoring the second highest sales level in this decade and keeping the moderate while steady growth started in the previous year.
While 50cc moped segment declined a further 5%, the motorbike segment grew up 5.6% and the scooter over 50cc segment grew 9.7%, driven by the electric segment, boomed +507%.
The total electric segment reported a record of 2.547 sales, up 79% from the previous year, representing the 1.3% of the total market.
The Competitive Arena
The market is almost concentrated with the Top 10 brands holding 79% of the total volume, while 239 brands have registered at least one units in the 2018.
Following the huge surprise reported for the 2018, when Piaggio ended as market leader overtaking the local icon BMW, in the 2019 the R1250GS launch – with a dramatic immediate success in Germany as in the rest of Europe – restored the natural ranking and BMW was back on top of the list, even with a not wide gap over all followers. Total sales were 26.266 (+11.4%).
In second place Piaggio with 24.979 sales (+3.7%) losing the leadership gained in the 2018, while in third position arrived Honda selling 20.049 units (+1.7%) with 10.4% of market share.
In fourth place Yamaha with 17.467 units (+3.0%) followed by KTM with 16.910 (+8.5%) and Kawasaki with 14.504 (+9.1%).
Harley–Davidson ranks in 7th place with 10.268 sales (-6.9%) ahead of Peugeot with 8.241 (-5.7%), Suzuki with 7.493 (-5.8%) and in 10th place Aprilia with 5.321 (+25.9%), one of the best performance of the year. Ducati has lost 5%.
